5 Tips on how to repair damaged carpets and rugs

Have you ever come across some sort of damage to your carpet flooring? Don’t worry, you could save the day with some tried and tested repairing methods. Whether it’s a patch or a hole, a shag or a stain, there’s a solution to every problem related to your carpet. Stick with us to learn.

Patch the carpet for a hole

Found a hole in your plush carpet? No need to mask it with a table or a rug. Instead, just fix it by patching the carpet and covering the hole without seeking any help from a professional. Here are a few steps to make things easier:

  • Mark the hole with a square or circle.
  • Get a specialist knife and then cut out the marked shape.
  • Remove the affected part of the carpet.
  • Patch the hole with a piece of undamaged carpet (make sure it’s exactly the same colour, pattern and size as the affected part).

Fix snags/pulls with fabric glue

Problems like snags/pulls arise due to pet nails. To prevent such problems from happening, make sure your pet’s nails are trimmed. If you want to fix a snag, all you need to do is follow these simple steps:

  • First of all, trim the snag.
  • Push it to one side of the carpet to see the gap from where it came.
  • Use a little bit of fabric glue to fill that gap.
  • With the help of a long thin tool, such as a pen, place the snag back into the hole.
  • Let it dry for some time.

Treat carpet tearing with threading

Tearing mostly appears along the seam of the carpet. It takes place due to too much foot traffic or dragging the furniture over the carpet. Tearing is frustrating, but not beyond repair. Here’s how to repair it in the simplest manner:

  • First, thread heavy the fishing line with an upholstered needle.
  • Push the needle through the edges of the tear.
  • If you find it difficult to get the needle through, use needle-nose pliers.
  • Make sure to space the stitches around ¾ inches apart.

Address wet carpets as soon as possible

When you come across stained or wet carpets, it’s better to act as fast as possible to prevent the growth of mould and bacteria. Whether it’s spilled red wine or pet urine, here’s what should be done:

  • Evaluate the situation to try to figure out the source of moisture.
  • If the source is flooding or sewage, then the carpet is not safe in that area.
  • If the source is a broken pipe, fix the source first.
  • Make sure you dry your wet carpet within 48 hours to prevent mould formation.
  • Use fans or a wet-vac to dry your textured carpet.

Block the sunlight to prevent colour fading

Your once beautiful carpet may look dull, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring it back to life. Carpet fading generally occurs due to sunlight. So, keep your curtains or blinds down during the day or use UV blocking blinds. If it’s in the early stage of fading, consider applying a saltwater solution. However, if the carpet is badly faded, simply dye it.

With these tips, you can save your carpet from a bundle of problems. To avoid any kind of carpet damage, it is advised to thoroughly clean your carpets.
